Traditions That Keep the Peace (and the Fun)
In my family, we love getting together in big groups for the holidays. But let’s be honest—when you mix multiple generations, strong opinions, and a little wine… things can get lively. Someone wisely figured out a long time ago that politics should be avoided at all costs, so we now have two tried-and-true traditions that keep things festive and drama-free.
The Distraction Game
At each place setting, we tie a string that leads to the centerpiece (a festive bowl or sleigh, depending on your vibe). Each string is attached to a fun little party favor—think yo-yos, whoopie cushions, or kazoos. It’s silly, low-budget, and gets everyone laughing before the main course. A great non-denominational tradition for breaking the ice and keeping things light!

Rose, Bud, & Thorn
Once dinner is underway, we go around the table and share:
Rose: Something we’re proud of from the past year
Bud: Something we’re working on or excited about
Thorn: Something we’d rather leave behind
It’s a beautiful way to reflect, support one another, and stay connected—without anyone debating current events.
The Chex Mix Legacy
Our family also swears by a big batch of homemade Chex Mix every holiday season. It’s nostalgic, cozy, and keeps everyone snacking between meals. The classic recipe is on the box, but my pro tip? Double the Worcestershire and add a dash of Tabasco for some zip. Your house will smell amazing, and the bowl won’t last long.
