Holiday by Laura Davis

Theo-Approved Pet Shops for the Holidays:

If your pup is anything like our dog Theo, they’ll love the festive snacks at Le Barkery (Buena Park), Paw Naturals (West Loop), and our go-to, Bentley’s Pet Stuff (Old Town, Lakeview and Rogers Park).
Looking for something extra special? Chicago Dog Co. has the cutest custom stockings and holiday toys for under the tree.
And let’s not forget—Chicago winters can be harsh. Theo wasn’t a fan of booties at first, but now he gets it. For cozy coats, paw balm, and winter gear, check out Tails in the City (Gold Coast) or Kriser’s (Streeterville & several locations all over town and the burbs)—must-haves for those frigid walks!

DIY Holiday Wreath (Quick + Fun!)

What You’ll Need:
• Wreath base (grapevine, wire, or fresh greens)
• Greenery (pine, cedar, eucalyptus—I’m partial to eucalyptus for a softer look)
• Floral wire or hot glue
• Accents: pinecones, berries, ribbons, ornaments

Steps:

  1. Start by layering your greenery in one direction around the base.

  2. Add your accents—I love using pinecones, dried berries, and natural ribbons like twine.

  3. Finish with a bow and a loop for hanging.
    Bonus Tip:
Add a few drops of essential oil or tuck in dried citrus slices for an extra festive (and fragrant!) touch.

How to Make Your Home Smell Like the Holidays

  • Simmer a pot of orange slices, cinnamon sticks, cranberries, and pine—instant cheer on the stove.

  • Light a candle or diffuser with notes of fir, spiced cider, or peppermint.

  • Spritz throws and pillows with a holiday fabric spray for a subtle festive scent.

  • Add fresh greenery—nothing beats the real aroma of pine or cedar indoors.

  • And of course... bake something delicious! Cookies or cinnamon rolls are a tradition in our home (and they make the whole house smell amazing).

My Favorite Holiday Tea Spots in Chicago!

Tea is my love language, so it’s only natural I’m sharing my top five spots for a cozy afternoon treat:

  • The Drake (Gold Coast) – my forever favorite: classic, elegant, and complete with harp music

  • The Langham (River North) – seasonal themes and gorgeous river views

  • The Peninsula (River North) – refined, relaxed, and beautifully festive

  • LondonHouse (Loop) – a modern vibe with killer views from the 21st floor

  • Russian Tea Time (Loop) – cozy, casual, and full of Old World charm
